Summary

Children who do not receive appropriate mental health care often do not succeed in school and are at risk of escalating into the juvenile justice system and/or child welfare system. Parents often struggle to navigate these additional systems and there are a number of barriers which parents face. A number of parents may not be aware their child needs mental health care. As such, NJPC provides advocacy, training and education, information services and supports, and outreach to parents.

Challenge

Many parents and caregivers often are not aware of services that exist. Children who do not receive appropriate mental health care often do not succeed in school and are at risk of escalating into the juvenile justice system and/or child welfare system. Parents often struggle to navigate these additional systems and there are a number of barriers which parents face. A number of parents may not be aware their child needs mental health care.

Solution

Parents that attend the training will be (1) afforded increased access to mental health care and treatment (2) better able to make informed decisions about the services their children receive, (3) prepared to partner with service providers and advocate for their children, (4) empowered to provide informal support and training to other parents in their local communities, (5) strengthen their knowledge of the systems that serve their families, and their rights and responsibilities.

Long-Term Impact

Ultimately, children whose families receive training and education services will (1) abide by the law, (2) be better able to succeed in school, (3) remain in their local communities, (4) remain together and be strengthened and (5) children and families will thrive.
