This project is built strongly on a commitment to ensuring the health and social well-being of 300 orphans and vulnerable children under 5 in the slum community, Kinaani, outside Nairobi, Kenya.
Severe poverty in the community of Kinaani, a slum outside of Nairobi, has caused the health and well being of the children under 5 years to be seriously compromised. From work done in three nearby slum communities, we found high rates of malnutrition, lack of complete immunizations, frequent cases of diarrhea and pneumonia and the lack of knowledge concerning the importance of nurturing, loving, protective, stimulating caregiver-child interactions.
Community Health Workers will distribute enriched food supplements and nutrition education to mother/caregivers of children who are underweight, arrange for immunizations and focus on teaching the essentials of positive and secure attachments.
Lay the foundation for better health and development for the 300 children under 5, which is crucial to lifelong positive patterns of development. In contrast, sick and neglected children, without help, will suffer lifelong negative consequences.
