Through this project Joy Foundation aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of sexual abuse and the rights of the children among children, parents, teachers and those who work in close proximity to children. This project will help to tackle all neglects related to child sexual abuse and will promote early prevention of this issue.
Brutal rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur is not a one-off incident. As many as 11 cases of child sexual abuse are reported from across Pakistan every day. Total of 1,764 cases of child abuse were reported across country in first six months of 2017 alone. Main cause of these incidents is lack of awareness among parents. These issues are not even discussed in schools with children. This project will involve parents and teachers to identify/prevent abuse as children rely on them.
Child sexual abuse is a critical issue that needs discussing in schools and at home. Joy Foundation will conduct meetings with 5 school to allow for a 20 minute class on discussion of abuse. 2 teachers will be chosen from each school to be trained on how to discuss abuse in class. Parents Counseling Meetings will be conducted with parents. Meetings will focus on involvement of parents in child's day-to-day activities. It will also be discussed that how to keep children aware of such issues.
The project will train teachers from 5 different schools and parents from 5 different communities of District Toba Tek Singh. Through teachers the students in school will be targeted. And through the counseling meetings children in local communities will be targeted. This will become a continuous process and even if the project finishes the activities will keep going as teachers will take classes on child sexual abuse in schools and parents will keep using the awareness strategies at homes.
