This project seeks to create a Urban Food Forest Greenbelt in Katlehong, Johannesburg South Africa. Rushed planning to address inequitable housing policies have left many South African townships with houses but little or no nature, trees, biodiversity or greenery. We want to change that and make sure that children grow up in a landscape with trees and communities are able to live in a healthy, resilient, beautiful environment.

There are often few or no trees in South African township homes. This greatly effects the the environment and communities living conditions. Imagine children growing up without trees. Communities are losing their connection with nature. Townships need beautification. People need pride in their environment, good health and clean air. There is also a high unemployment rate combined with lack of food security and a critical need to create sustainable livelihoods in South Africa.

Planting trees in a sustainable way and ensuring they survive will: Transform the Landscape - contributing to food security, health, biodiversity and pride. This project will also create short-term employment, train and develop skills, helping aid community members gain formal employment in environmental services, landscaping, agriculture or nursery production. We will build capacity, networks and skills in communities, which creates social threads and bonds, improving the lives of all.

Long-Term Impact

Increased number of sustainable livelihoods / access to formal economy through skills and experience - Poverty Alleviation - Connecting people to their roots and nature: something traditionally very important in African cultures which is being lost through urbanisation, urban migration and disintegration of family structures (often HIV-related). - Climate Change Adaptation/Mitigation - Increase Food Security - Creating an environment every child should have access to/grow up in. Social Justice!
