Proyecto Horizonte began its work in Ushpa-Ushpa in in 2004 with the construction of a day care center, and have continued to expand based on evolving local needs. We now support programs for children, youth and adults in the areas of health, education and community development. All programs are built on a model of sustainability and active local participation, with the end goal of full ownership and management by the community.
Although there have been important improvements in the quality of life of the community of Ushpa-Ushpa since we started, many homes still lack running water, and many families are unable to provide access to education and adequate nutrition for their children. In addition to the unfavorable economic conditions, domestic violence, gang participation, alcohol, drug and sexual abuse, unplanned pregnancies and child abandonment are all problems that are significantly present in our community
Proyecto Horizonte implements an integral approach as the problems that are faced are complex and need multiple solutions. We work to prevent illnesses and vulnerable situations through training and skills building as well as offering medical and dental services, tutoring, psychologist, legal and social work consultations to help the ill and the vulnerable overcome their situation. We provide scholarships to improve school attendance and sport and arts programs for holistic development.
Our programs will ensure the reduction in illness and infant mortality, improve education levels and the personal development of youth, providing better economic and social opportunities for this generation and, as our programs will be self-sustaining, the impact will be for many generations to come. We have already succeeded in handing over the daycare center and the school we built to the community; both institutions are now self-sustainable.
