Darfur Women Network is profoundly grateful for the generous sponsorship of Amy Porter and her husband, Mark Porter, who funded the production of 747 safe stoves. This initiative has had a significant impact on the lives of refugee women in the camp, providing them with a source of income and contributing to their economic empowerment. By enabling these women to earn a livelihood, the Porters have helped them take critical steps toward self-sufficiency, improving their families' well-being and resilience in challenging circumstances.
The impact of this donation extends beyond economic benefits. The 747 refugee mothers who received the safe stoves at no cost have experienced improved safety and security. Before this intervention, many women were at risk of rape and hostile attacks when collecting firewood in the forest. The safe stoves reduce their need to venture out for firewood, significantly lowering their exposure to danger and enhancing their overall safety. Moreover, the stoves contribute to a healthier home environment by reducing smoke during cooking, which is safer for children and more environmentally friendly.
In the long term, the benefits of this project will continue to ripple through the community. As these women become more economically empowered, they are better positioned to invest in their families' future, whether through education, health, or other essential needs. The reduction in firewood use also supports environmental preservation, contributing to the sustainability of the community's natural resources. The Porters' support has laid the groundwork for lasting positive change, improving the quality of life for hundreds of refugees and setting a powerful example of how targeted interventions can create meaningful, long-term impacts.
