Cell Phone Distribution Project

Summary

Cell phones benefit 24000 refugees to immediately communicate reports of suspicion as a warning system. They can be used to warn women and girls during their trips to collect firewood to ensure their protection from rape and violence against them. Cell phones will help refugees by spreading nonviolent tactics and information to stay connected. Data such as, pictures, text, and audio can be stored on cell phones in terms as evidence and warnings. Families can be kept in touch with each others.

Challenge

Safety is the utmost concern of Darfur Women Network(DWN). Communication is key in the refugee camps, villages, and those who are on their way to collect firewood in Chad. Since many areas are still high conflict zones and firewood treks for women and girls last from sunrise to sunset, having access to danger alerts does not exist, therefore, Darfur refugee women and girls are vulnerable for rape and hostile attack.

Solution

Providing camps with cell phones enables safety groups, individuals that will communicate information about suspicious people around the forest or around their camps, the arrival of new supplies or medical aid, food, and water or emergencies. They will communicate about event and vital community information. The refugees do not have transportation; thus, the cell phone can benefit from the use of communication to protect women and girls from rape and from hostile violence against females.

Long-Term Impact

The refugees have been isolated from accessing educational, informational outlets, and completely disconnected with the outside world. The DWN provides them with the tools to learn, communicate and connect is important for their educational and social development, individually and in rebuilding their communities. Since we are committed to progress in the camps, it is imperative that our field staff have the tools to collect data, document, replay to and from staff as well as staff in the US
