On the surface, buying a bus might seem like a luxury. Recently, it has become a necessity for the Cambodian Children's Fund. CCF was founded in Steung Meanchey, formerly Phnom Penh's largest & only garbage dump and home to thousands of Cambodia's most destitute residents. In 2004, CCF's initial year, there were 84 children enrolled in our programs. Now, there are over 1,400 students! To ensure their safety and continued success, a bus program is paramount.
The number one reason students at CCF drop out of our programs is not lack of motivation, but rather a lack of transportation to and from school. CCF has grown from 87 students in 2004 to currently over 1,400. This has placed an unprecedented burden on our transportation needs. For the children of the Steung Meanchey area, education is their lifeline out of poverty - making access to transportation an essential part of providing a successful education to the children.
The Buy a Bus Project will ensure that every CCF student has safe, reliable transportation & equal access to our array of programs. In addition to daily transportation to & from school, buses are needed for leadership camps, study tours at universities, food and shoe distributions, visits home during special occasions, and other activities. These are vital aspects of our ultimate goal of converting Cambodia's most impoverished children into tomorrow's leaders.
Since the lack of transportation is the number one reason our students leave CCF, this project will lead to higher retention rates and ensure that every child with the desire to learn will have the opportunity to succeed and move into a better life. Having a fleet of buses will allow CCF the flexibility of reaching out to thousands of children in the provinces surrounding Phnom Penh and throughout Cambodia - often times these are the children that can best be helped by the programs we offer.
