Music Rx transforms the hospital environment, creating a fun atmosphere that helps seriously ill kids forget their fear, anxiety and pain. Our trained music therapists and volunteer musicians use the therapeutic benefits of music to create a soothing escape, a lively diversion and an easy way to express emotions. We provide tailored experiences at bedsides and in hallways, from oncology and burn units to intensive care and rehabilitation. Our magical mobile music cart plays music and videos, offers karaoke, holds hundreds of instruments, docks dozens of iPods and even has its own recording studio.
How we did this year In fiscal year 2009, Music Rx provided more than $520,000 in free daily services to 25 children’s units, including Legacy Emanuel and Doernbecher Children’s Hospitals, CARES Northwest, Oregon Burn Center, Shriner’s Hospital for Children and Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital. We provided service 9,791 times, serving 2,566 kids. Our on-call music outreach program grew, giving end-of-life comfort to 721 terminally ill children, teens and their grieving family members. A dedicated 55 volunteers donated 453 hours of service for the Hallway Music program, providing comforting music to an estimated 5,000 kids, teens, family members, patient visitors and hospital staff.
Let’s do more We’re expanding! CCA receives requests from all over the country for our Music Rx program. After 14+ years of research and development, awards and accolades, we have partnered with Starlight Children’s Foundation to expand this transformational programming into Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and Miller Children’s Hospital, both in the Los Angeles area in July 2009.
