Casa de los Angeles Daycare Center

by Casa de los Angeles

Casa de los Angeles is a free daycare center in Central Mexico for the children of mothers who come from the outskirts of town to work or to sell their wares. Often these children were being left home alone before this center was established. Besides care for their children, these families receive medical care, clothing distribution, transitional housing, after school care, food bank . . . all done in a relationship of mutuality that respects the dignity of each individual.

Single working Moms of Central Mexico, living in poverty, need to work. If they do not have a safe place for their children during the work day they have few options. In some cases, they leave their children home alone. The other option is to take them to work, which often means that jobs are not long lasting. Finally, for many, not working has become the norm with dependence on extended family members.

Casa de los Angeles provides a safe haven for children from 2 months to 4 years. The little ones are inquisitive and want to learn so we have the opportunity to offer them in a preschool education. Since the center is free, each family served is required to participate in the life of the daycare center by giving one hour of service for each day their child is present . . . helping in classrooms or the kitchen or cleaning . . . as they become a central part of the community.

Long-Term Impact

The children are given a sound foundation before the enter the primary grades. They are fed nutritious meals and thrive. The mothers feel good about participating in the life of the center through their hour of service so their self-esteem goes up, realizing that they are worthy of the help they receive. Families slowly but surely move out of poverty as the mothers work to make a better life for their children.
