Project #25778

Cervical Cancer Screening for12,000 Karamoja Women

by Child Way Uganda

It is noted that at least 2,464 women are dying in Ugandan from cervical cancer annually. This project will provide an opportunity for poor women in hard-to-reach communities of Karamoja who cannot afford to access services for early diagnosis &treatment to the disease, by hiring services of qualified medical personnel from other parts of the country to conduct screening outreaches to promote early detection and support early referral and treatment to reduce maternal deaths.

Annually, an estimated 500,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, over 270,000 women lose their lives to this devastating disease. Unfortunately, nearly 85 percent of the women who die live in resource- poor countries like Uganda, where there is limited access to cervical cancer screening programs," (report by WHO). In Uganda approximately 3,500 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, & almost 2,500 die of the disease each year. People lack basic facts relating to cervical cancer

This project will bring a team of qualified medical practitioners (with technical expertise in cervical cancer) from health institutions within Uganda to Karamoja region to sensitize women /create greater awareness on cervical cancer, create demand to improve screening uptake, conduct HPV &cervical cancer screening among women within hardest-to-reach communities in Karamoja to promote early detection, treatment, referral of advanced cases & follow-up for appropriate management

Long-Term Impact

Sensitization/awareness creation will influence the perceptions, attitudes, and practices of over 12,000 women and other community members (women &men, boys &girls) to improve their health seeking behaviors (like going for periodic screening by women), take precautions to promote prevention. Result from this project will give us a clear understanding of cervical cancer prevalence in Karamoja region to inform our advocacy with governments to provide services to fight the disease.
