“Spare a little thought for Cambodia if possible”

A special request for consideration from Cambodia

Today we received our first payment from Global Giving - and we say “Thanks Global Givers”

The amount we received was $290

Now this amount may seem small to our readers but for us it has meant a lot and we have now been able to purchase the quality Volleyballs required for our upcoming Cambodian national Volleyball League which starts on the 24th of July

Now the rationale behind this request for Global Givers to consider assisting the CNVLD is:

Somehow we don’t seem to be making progress with our Global Giving fundraising despite all our efforts with very limited internet resources - The total amount raised over 6 months has been $356 (for which we are grateful) - There are times that we often feel here that Cambodia has somehow been forgotten as the world of Aid and development focuses on providing, granted, much needed assistance, to the African continent.

It almost seems that the recent tragic past of Cambodia has been forgotten somewhere in the recent equation of Aid and Development – That Cambodia is still grappling with the legacy of Pol Pots genocide, over 30 years of civil conflict and still dealing with the horrendous consequences of the Landmine with an estimated 3 million landmines still littering the landscape.

In addition, I want to remind readers that, tragically, Cambodia has the highest percentage of persons with a disability, per head of population worldwide and being frank, the CNVLD despite all the success and progress to date has only touched the tip of the iceberg (or palm tree as we like to say here in Cambodia).

There are over 40,000 landmine survivors alone in Cambodia and an estimated 80,000 persons who are the victims of Polio!

Cambodia, despite finally achieving peace and stability is still one of the poorest countries in the world and the CNVLD fully recognizes that there is so much still do be done! Currently the CNVLD operates in 11 provinces out of a total of 26 provinces – we have a long way to go so we can reach out and let more Cambodians with a disability experience the joy and remarkable positive impact of being involved in a CNVLD sports program

So in finishing, all we ask from the many wonderful people who contribute to Global Giving:

“Spare a little thought for Cambodia if possible”

With thanks

Chris Minko Secretary-General The CNVLD Phnom Penh Cambodia Friday, July 10, 2009
