Hi GlobalGiving Community! Community2Community (C2C) hopes and prays that you are having a happy and healthy 2022. In March, we shared with you that, with the help of our partner HAC-Haiti, we sent down 35 boxes of personal protective supplies to help our communities remain safe against COVID-19 and during hurricane season (June to November). It must be said that it is always challenging to send items to Haïti, as there is always the obstacle of items remaining in customs for a long period of time. In this particular scenario, not only were we dealing with customs, but also the turbulent social environment, which made the path of delivering the items from Port au Prince to Petit Goave a strenuous and dangerous one. We are happy to report that the boxes reached our partner community in Petit Goave safely in June! Not only will these supplies be utilized for COVID-19 purposes, but it will also go towards the community’s emergency preparedness plans and kits to ensure the community is ready to take care of its people when necessary. However, work did not stop while our partner community was waiting to receive the personal protective equipment. Our Mountainside Partner Community continues to make progress on constructing the permanent school building that currently serves children K through 6th grade, with the hope of adding more grades in the near future. We look forward to sharing more about The Saul Louis Community School with you soon. Although we still have not made it on the ground in almost three years, the Peasant Associations continue to work. The C2C Executive Team also continues to meet, plan, repurpose and cast vision, with each other, our supporters, and with our partner community, to ensure that the work continues to produce results, which is leading our partner community to achieve self-sufficiency. As always thank you for your continued support and staying on this journey with us. We look forward to sharing more project updates and tangible results with you. Until next time, be well and stay safe!
Happy 2022! We hope you are having a great start to the new year. When we last wrote to you, Haiti as a whole, was experiencing a challenging few months. However, our Mountainside Partner Community remained vigilant in continuing the work in their community. While we are working on raising funds to begin construction on the Health and Wellness Center, the community has been working on the construction of the permanent school, which once completed, will also be utilized as a space to hold the Continuous Care Initiative until the Health and Wellness Center can be built. The Saul Louis Community School serves children K through 7th grade and will be adding weekend vocational training for youth and adults. While progress continued on the permanent school structure on the ground, in New York, we were able to order more personal protective equipment (PPE) (isolation gowns, reusable cotton face masks, safety shields, safety goggles) that will ensure our Partner Communities’ safety as COVID-19 remains prevalent in Haiti. With the help of our partner HAC-Haiti, we sent 35 boxes of PPE to our Partner Communities in Petit Goave, Haiti. We are happy to report the boxes made it to Haiti and are currently in customs. We look forward to sharing more updates with you as we continue to plan out the 2022 year. Your giving keeps the work going. Until the next time, be well and stay safe!
Although the past few months have been challenging for Haiti, C2C and our Partner Communities remain hopeful, encouraged, steadfast and focused on the path to creating self-sufficient communities. On August 14th, an earthquake severely impacted Gran Sud (the grand south). Fortunately, our immediate communities in Petit Goave were not severely impacted with physical damage. Our mountainside Peasant Association was able to make multiple trips to bring water and supplies to neighboring communities, as well as, held meetings to discuss how we can help in the rebuilding efforts. We are working on a strategic response plan and look forward to sharing more details in the upcoming months. During this tumultuous time and while COVID is still a daily concern, our need to secure sustainable healthcare and management, remained top priority. We became a finalist in the Haiti Renewal Alliance’s (HRA) Investor Tank Competition, specifically in their health category, with the opportunity to win $150k to construct a permanent, physical home for our C2C Continuous Care Initiative with our Mountainside Partner Community. Although we didn’t win the $150k, we remain vigilant in our pursuit to raise the funds and see the construction of the Health and Wellness Center come to fruition. It is important that not only our mountainside community, but also neighboring communities have access to affordable, preventative and consistent healthcare management to care for people not only during a pandemic, but especially on a day to day basis. We are looking forward to sharing more details with you in the next report!
Our work with our Partner Communities will continue until our communities are self-sufficient and can maintain their self-sufficiency. An earthquake, hurricanes and COVID-19 will not stop them or us from moving forward. In our last report, we shared that your financial contribution allowed us to successfully purchase food supplies to distribute to approximately 250 families amongst the two communities towards the end of 2020. Although COVID-19 is still very present, our communities are holding up strong, especially after receiving the initial COVID-19 response packets and the food supplies. While they, like the rest of the world continue to navigate through this pandemic, we are hoping to get back on track with creating and supporting initiatives, such as as a girls empowerment summer program to address their needs and support their growth and success within their communities and hopefully resume our Health, Education, Economic Development and Environmental Stabilization Initiatives, see pics below, prior to COVID-19. We will keep you abreast of our next steps and how you can continue to support our Partner Communities in Petit Goave, Haiti. Be well and stay safe!
On January 12, 2010 at approximately 4:35pm, over 315,000 people lost their lives in the Haïti earthquake. Every year on the anniversary of this devastating event, C2C remembers that we went to Petit Goâve because of the earthquake, but we stayed because of the people. Our work with our Partner Communities will continue until our communities are and can maintain self-sufficiency. An earthquake didn’t stop our communities from moving forward 11 years ago and COVID certainly didn’t today. When we last wrote to you, we were in the process of raising funds to purchase gloves, masks and soap to send down to our two Partner Communities to create 1,000 COVID-19 response packets to distribute to families in each of their communities. Along with the COVID-19 response packets, the Peasant Associations of each community requested additional funding to purchase food supplies to distribute to approximately 250 vulnerable families between their communities. Your financial contribution made both happen! Working together, both Peasant Associations distributed the purchased goods in December 2020 to approximately 250 families between their communities! 2020 was a hard and challenging year. However, 2020 truly brought C2C and our Partner Communities together and taught us the true meaning of working with the community to ensure that even during a pandemic, the work continued, simply differently and unexpectedly. For 2021 we expect that the adapting and adjusting we made will result in fresh, new possibilities and partnerships. Thank you again for your support of our Partner Communities. Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year!
