Students in Philadelphia’s school system graduate at a rate just barely above 60%. The drop-out crisis has a profound effect on the city and on its youth. buildOn works with schools and local service partners to address this crisis, one student at a time. buildOn runs afterschool youth service programs in 5 Philadelphia high schools throughout the city, 4 of which have 50 person programs. Students strive to address Philly’s specific needs with their outreach. So far in 2014, buildOn students have contributed more than 300 service hours to the Gift of Life Family House, a home away from home for family members, patients awaiting life-saving transplants, and organ transplant recipients. buildOn students routinely go and prepare meals (or bake bread/cookies) for families staying at the Gift of Life Family House. Students also meet once a week to promote organ donation all leading up to the annual Donor Dash which takes place during spring break.
