Challenge

While the flat plains of the Terai in Nepal are among the most fertile and productive parts of the country, the majority of people living there are still impoverished. The level of education and literacy is very low compared to other parts, and the levels of malnutrition and inequity in this area are the highest of anywhere in the country. The status of women is of concern for these areas as they have traditionally been discriminated against and denied even basic education in most cases.

Solution

This project will assist 8,900 families with gifts of water buffalo, goats, pigs, improved cooking stoves, biogas units for energy, and training in animal management, sustainable farming methods, animal and human nutrition, and literacy.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of this project is a self-sustaining community that is well-versed in all aspects of animal management, sustainable farming, and community development.
