Challenge

The illegal wildlife trade is a problem that affects the Colombian biodiversity. Environmental authorities confiscate animals and often must keep them in captivity because sometimes it is not possible to return them to the wild. La Fundacion El Refugio took on the challenge of supporting the rescue of wild animals since 2005 and maintains a collection of wild animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade; conducting further educational work through guided various groups made visits.

Solution

Building an Immersion Aviary in an area of 152 m2, will allow us to receive approximately 200 birds rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. In a natural environment and handling high animal welfare standards, our guests will have a close encounter with the birds, admiring them, knowing them and learning to respect and value them, besides creating awareness about the problem of illegal wildlife trade in our country and the importance not to buy, sell or give away wildlife.

Long-Term Impact

Having a large Immersion Aviary where we can keep a collection of 200 birds rescued from illegal wildlife trade, will increase our ability to support the environmental authorities. At the same time, will maximize our educational work to generate a unique experience through a close encounter with the birds, where environmental education is as a tool for long-term action, to the extent that raises awareness about the problem of illegal wildlife trade and promote the respect of wildlife.
