The population in this community is about 15,000 and 30% are of child bearing age. The distance to the next health centre providing maternity services is approximately 6 kilometres. We have had incidences where we had to provide three emergency deliveries as the mothers could not make it to the next health centres before the baby comes. We would be helping many mothers in this community by completing the maternity centre.
During the LRA war which lasted 23 years, many infrastructures were destroyed save for the main referral hospital in Gulu Town and a few private hospitals. Pregnant mothers had to travel many miles on foot . to get to a health centre. As a result many chose and still choose to deliver from home. This increases on the maternal mortality which stands at 430 deaths per 100,000 live births at the moment. However, a maternity clinic within the community will encourage mothers to use the facility.
If the maternity centre is completed, it will be in the proximity of the community therefore many mothers will be encouraged to deliver at the health centre under the care of trained personnel. When mothers begin to use the facility, it will contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality which stands at 430 deaths per 100,000 live births.
The population in Bungatira sub-county is approximately 15,000 and 30% of these are of child bearing age. The maternity centre will attract all mothers of childbearing age to benefit from the services of trained personnel and stay alive. It will also encourage them to bring their children for all vaccinations since thehealth centre is within the community and they do not have to travel long distance.
