A lack of education strengthens the poverty cycle but our community is fighting back, fighting for their education. Waves of Hope has partnered with Nicaragua's Ministry of Education to build the 2nd high school in rural northwest Nicaragua. Classes start in February 2014 and there are already over 230 students registered. The school will offer a 5-year accredited high school education, a computer lab, a library, vocational programs and more. Help us build a classroom. Help us create change.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Locally, the government education system ends at grade 6. After grade 6, students can travel one hour each way by bus to a high school in the city, an option most cannot afford, or they can attend a local Sunday high school equivalency program.Without a high school education, students are unable to pass the university entrance exam, thus, leaving the majority of students unqualified for better employment opportunities. This only deepens the poverty cycle. Our community demands a better future.

How will this project solve this problem?

We have 230 students registered for 2014. These students will be the first to receive a full high school education and will have a much better chance for acceptance into university. The high school curriculum will also be teaching English for Tourism, Computers, Literacy and more. In addition, the high school will offer technical courses to secondary graduates such as baking, hotel management, cooking, mechanics, organic agriculture and more. Our goal is to create skills to drive employment.

Potential Long Term Impact

The goal is a better future with more opportunity for all. Locally there is no economy. All money earned by those with jobs is spent in the city on basic goods (rice, beans, etc.). The vision is that with these new skill sets, various services will be offered locally (tourism support, baked goods, motor repair, local produce, etc.) and a small micro-economy will be born. We aim to graduate 50-60 students each year and we believe that each graduate and their family will have a better future.
