Postcard from a field visit

During a recent trip to New York City, Felipe from GlobalGiving stopped by Brooklyn Rescue Mission for a quick visit. Here is his postcard from the field:

Brooklyn Rescue Mission's goal is to help Bedford-Stuyvesant residents live healthier lives through healthy eating and exercise.

I toured through their urban agriculture plot. They grow numerous vegetables and fruits: peppers, figs, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes, eggplant, etc. Quite a few volunteers were working on the plot, and when I talked to some of them, they said that some of them came back to work there regularly. The Jacksons, the directors, are looking to build a greenhouse to enable them to grow food throughout the year and to protect it from city cats. They also hope to install an aquaponic system.

The Mission has also set up a nearby farmers' market. The market is next to a park that has not been used recently, so they envision the market as a community revitalization project, in a way. Residents of the community will come to learn more about healthy food and how to live healthier lives. They plan to add yoga classes and walking groups into the farmers' market.

Through food and healthy living messages, the Jacksons hope to build a stronger community in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
