14 & Counting

Kappa Kappa Gammas at UT-Austin, Ellie 2nd from leftBuilding Tomorrow supporters have come across our work in more ways than we are even aware of, so it came as no surprise when Ellie Chernosky of the University of Texas-Austin contacted us about getting involved in March 2011. As philanthropy chair for her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, she was looking for a meaningful cause to rally her chapter around. She was researching online when she stumbled across our work.

She was taken with our purpose and knew that Building Tomorrow was the perfect cause for Kappa. In an email, she said that after exploring our website—particularly—and learning about our other college chapters, she was excited about our mission and all the ways to fundraise and tell others about the cause. Ellie “loved that people could see directly where their money was going” and that 100% of funds raised by students goes directly to building schools in Uganda. With the support-base of 150 girls in her chapter and the Greek system at Texas, she saw huge potential.

She was spot-on. In seven months, Ellie’s chapter raised $45,000 and plans were put in motion for Building Tomorrow’s 14th academy in Uganda, the future BT Academy of Kabasegwa.

the future BT Academy of Kabasegwa will replace this structure The new Academy will be BT’s first in Lyantonde District, located approximately 180km (3-4hrs drive) outside of Kampala. The Academy will serve the villages of Kabasegwa, Gayaaza, Kakibanda, Omukatoogo, Buyanja, Kabetemere, Bioworobo and Lyakisana. Current classroom infrastructure in Kabasegwa consists of a temporary structure partitioned by papyrus to accommodate six classes (P1-P6).
