Fundacion NTD Ingredientes works with elder people and community development. Since 2015 we were working with a rural community called Sierra Prieta in the north of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Here we worked with the Organic Oregano Project with 20 beneficiaries which the half of the participants were 60+ people. Now they have cultivated the oregano plants but they need a secure space to store it and prepare it for sale.
One of the main problems of the Sierra Prieta section is the lack of employment in the area. Many of the residents end up leaving their homes during the week in search of new opportunities in the urban centers of Santo Domingo. Consequently, infants and the elder people are left unprotected, which puts the vulnerability of the community at risk. Thanks to this project we can work on this problem that affects the population of this place.
The construction of a Collection Center will benefit us in: the motivation to work in a team, having a structure with the appropriate and hygienic conditions for re-packing and storing oregano, easy access to tools, a meeting point for associates, clients and related, in addition to be a space that may allow the continuing education of associates.
We believe in the sustainability of this project, especially because the 20 direct beneficiaries feel comfortable with the oregano product. Thanks to the training and the creation of a cooperative, cohesion among farmers will be achieved, strengthening the economy of the sector. Likewise, the integration of new generations will ensure the permanence of the project over time.
