This project will be the 1st youth orchestra in LA of its kind for ALL families. Students will receive a classical foundation and also explore the fun of Rock and Hip-Hop music. We will bridge the gap between local free programs that exclude students who are not below poverty level, or who are outside of redlined zip codes, and costly programs whose tuition rates average $1,200.00 per semester. We will build an instrument library and offer discounted rates on a sliding scale. Music unites!
Diversity representation is fewer than 4% in symphonies nationwide. This classical music divide has been expanding in recent years due to the economy. Children who can afford to be exposed to classical music are proven critical thinkers, self-confident, and tend to excel academically. Free string programs in LA address this need but exclude students who do not live in redlined zip code areas or meet low-income requirements to participate. The only option to free programs is extremely costly.
This project will bridge the gap between the free string programs and the very expensive string programs. We will create an opportunity not only for the middle-class, but we will also be inclusive to students with financial hardships and students who can afford to pay higher rates. This will be the 1st youth orchestra in LA to recruit students from different backgrounds and all walks of life while exploring the many diverse cultures within the world of music.
We will begin with 100 children, allowing them to develop a classical foundation of proper string technique, repertoire, and musicality. With continued participation in our programs, students will rise above life obstacles through music, no matter what their socio-economic status happens to be. They will expand their musical study in our cross-cultural learning environment while enhancing their self-esteem, mathematics skills, connection to community, and a lifelong commitment to practicing.
