Summary

Borrowed Freedom provides scholarship based Therapeutic (Adaptive) Riding, Hippotherapy and Equine Experiential Education for more than 45 clients with physical, intellectual, developmental, emotional and socio-economic special needs. All sessions are delivered at no charge for those with demonstrated need. With our proven curriculum we help riding students and therapy clients overcome many of the obstacles they face by encouraging personal growth, integrity, and wellness through horsemanship.

Challenge

Horses are also incredibly helpful for children and adults while they find their inner power and peace, build self-esteem, battle the effects of depression, improve health and wellness, and functioning for those with physical and developmental special needs. For our Veterans, it is a proven therapeutic tool to treat the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is, however, very costly averaging $250-500 for 10 sessions. This is more than our already struggling families can afford.

Solution

We aren't offering a free riding program with our scholarships, instead, we use our program as a catalyst for change. By including a volunteer component, we achieve several important levels of success including the financial health and stability of the program, a sense of community pride, parents setting a charitable example for their children, and children learning the joys of volunteerism, and all will learn vital life skills including healthy examples of personal ethics and responsibility.

Long-Term Impact

Through volunteerism, agricultural, environmental and equestrian activities, people of all ages and abilities will learn to respectfully care for the therapy horses, sanctuary horses, and the rescued horses as they recover from abuse, neglect, abandonment, and displacement. As they learn to care for the horses and the farm, they also improve their health, wellness, build self-esteem, and learn vital life skills. If our goals are met, we will be able to serve 40 or more individuals in 2015.
