1, 2, 3 Si Reaches New Heights!

Greetings and Salutations, Born to Read supporters! Thank you for your help in our effort to equip Bexar County families to successfully promote reading in the home beginning at birth.  It is only through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, partners and donors that Born to Read is able to have such an extensive impact on the San Antonio community. I especially want to thank both our new and long-time donors for their support of the Born to Read program.  The fact that you continue to donate during these trying economic times speaks volumes and we want you to know that we appreciate every single donation we receive! There are many projects worthy of funding and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation staff and volunteers are grateful for your investment and strive to make your money work as hard as they can toward eliminating illiteracy. Maya Angelou best expressed why the Born to Read program is so important to us when she said:

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” – Maya Angelou

As I mentioned in our previous report, our book, published with the help of Trinity University Press, “1, 2, 3 Sí” became available at Target and on  But the celebration isn’t over yet! I am thrilled to announce more exciting news with you! 1, 2, 3 Sí has been nominated for not one, but two prestigious awards! We’ve been nominated for the National Hispanic Book Award (in the children’s bilingual nonfiction category) and 1, 2, 3 Sí is also a finalist for the 2011 ForeWord Children’s Picture Book Award!

I’d like to take this time to mention that the ‘donate in honor of’ option would make a great gift for Mother’s Day! Moms never want for themselves, they always want for you. Make mom, grandma, aunt, or any woman who has made a significant impact in your life, proud and show her she raised you right a donation in honor of her.  Making a donation through GlobalGiving will give you the opportunity to send a free, personalized tribute card in electronic, print at home, or physical form, letting her know that a donation was made in her honor. Although $10 doesn’t sound like a lot, it purchases 5 bilingual books for children in need. Making a donation during GlobalGiving’s Mother’s Day Campaign will also help us to earn up to $2,500 in bonus awards for Born to Read, showing mom you good at managing your money! The campaign run May 1 – 13, so don’t forget to mark your calendars! Should you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me at
