Born to Read - Raising a Generation of Readers

1, 2, 3 Si Goes National!

Greetings, Born to Read supporters! I want to start off by thanking both our new and long-time donors for their support of the Born to Read program.  I’d also like to recognize our donors through who have added the Born to Read project to their corporate partner community giving pages or fundraisers, as well as those who have set up automatic monthly gifts.  Without your support, we would not be able to reach our goals and ensure that every child born in Bexar County is encouraged to read at a young age. There are many projects worthy of funding and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation staff and volunteers are grateful for your investment and strive to make your money work as hard as they can toward eliminating illiteracy. The following quote puts into words the joy, wonder, and knowledge that reading can bring:

“Lord! When you sell a man a book you don't sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue - you sell him a whole new life.  Love and friendship and humor and ships at sea by night - there's all heaven and earth in a book, a real book.” - Christopher Morley

Through the Born to Read initiative, the Foundation is working to help parents understand the importance of instilling the love of reading early on and letting them know the Library has a virtually endless supply of free books to nurture their offspring into becoming lifelong learner and readers. With, 49.6% of the U.S. population at a low level of literacy, our goal is to make Born to Read a national program and with your support we can make that happen! The book we published, with the help of Trinity University Press, “1, 2, 3 Sí” is now available at Target and on, making us one step closer to wiping out illiteracy. Over 65,000 copies of the book have been distributed and we are working hard to increase the number of national outlets where “1, 2, 3 Sí” will be available. Also, we plan to add at least two more books to this bilingual series, including one on colors and one on shapes.

Lastly, I’d like to remind you the ‘donate in honor of’ option would make a great gift for an avid reader, educator, librarian, or teacher! You’ll have the opportunity to send a free tribute card letting them know that a donation was made in their honor. Although $10 doesn’t sound like a lot, it purchases 5 bilingual books for children in need. Please feel free to share our cause with friends and family through email or word of mouth. Your support is greatly appreciated! Should you  have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me at
