Summary

The recent Hungama survey report reveals that 42% of children in India are malnourished which is being described as a National shame. Deprivation of nutritious food at an early age (0-6 yrs) can cause irreparable damages and paralyze the growth of a child for entire life. Hence, United Way Bengaluru launched its campaign called 'Born Learning' to impact 50,000 children by 2015 .

Challenge

Malnourishment at the infant stage causes irreparable damage to a child's learning abilities and normal growth. The Hungama report 2012 indicates that in India 42 per cent of children (0 - 6 years) are underweight and 58% are stunted by the time they are 24 months. The situation violates children rights to survival and development and also jeopardizes the nation's future. There is an urgent need to engage community and partners with the Government to address Malnutrition.

Solution

- Raise awareness among pregnant and lactating mothers on early child care (0 - 2 yrs) being very crucial in the life of a child. - Provide fresh, hot, wholesome nutritious food as per the expert committee recommendations to children between 2- 6 yrs. - Holistic Early Learning Program to enhance the gross motor, fine motor, sensory, cognitive, language, emotional & aesthetic, social and personal skills of children. - Raise child-centric awareness at community level.

Long-Term Impact

Mainstream with regular Government's Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) which is a Government run kindergarten.
