Challenge

HIV transmission from mother to child takes place during birth in 90% of cases. In 10% of cases, transmission occurs due to transmission in mother's milk. Providing HIV treatment to the mother prior to childbirth and during breastfeeding can prevent nearly 100% of HIV transmission.

Solution

We are currently testing all of the babies born to women attending the clinic during this five year period - so far all of the babies of mothers who participated in the mother to child HIV transmission program are HIV free.

Long-Term Impact

Between 2005 and 2009, GAIA Vaccine foundation helped screen more than 6,000 women for HIV infection in Bamako. The number of HIV-positive women accepting treatment increased from 35% in 2005 to 90% in 2009, due to GAIA VF's efforts.
