Summary

We are just three short months away from opening the Starfish Impact School and we need your help! One of our primary goals is to foster a lifelong love of reading in our students. We need your help in building out our library, starting with our first book: Esperanza Rising. For many of our girls, this will be the first book that they are reading not only for academic purposes, but also as part of an ongoing effort to experience learning as something fun, interactive, and engaging.

Challenge

Literacy is basic human right. Because of its "multiplier effect", literacy holds the key to eradicating poverty, achieving gender equality, and improving the quality of life for entire communities. Long-Term Impact

Esperanza Rising is about a young girl in Mexico whose life is interrupted by a sudden tragedy that forces Esperanza and her mother to flee to California during the Great Depression and settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, and lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, she must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances. Our educators will use this story to invoke discussion amongst students.
