One of Proyecto Horizonte's core pillars is education. We began our work in 2004 with the construction of the daycare center and the school in the community of Ushpa-Ushpa. Now that these institutions are sustainable, our objective is to ensure that all children in the community successfully graduate elementary and secondary school and are then able to pursue their studies at a university or at a technical college.
Many children in our community fall behind in their development and learning due to a number of reasons such as lack of early stimulation, learning difficulties, health and family issues. Learning is vital to a child's intellectual and social development. Lack of education can lead to situations like teenage pregnancy, gang violence, theft, drug use, and other crimes that tend to happen more frequently in non-educated settings.
We run a tutoring program to prevent elementary school children that fell behind in their learning or suffer from learning difficulties from repeating a school year or dropping out without acquiring the ability to read. Our team of educators work hard to get these children back on track, predominantly in the subjects of mathematics and Spanish. We also offer reading promotion sessions to these children to get them excited about reading and fight reading difficulties experienced by many of them.
The aforementioned programs positively affect motivation and enthusiasm of the children of Ushpa-Ushpa leading to reduced illiteracy, improved school attendance and education levels of the community. Ultimately, we strive to create better economic and social opportunities for this generation.
