Deaf girls are at the center of marginalization deaf population suffers in Africa - Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation! Since 2014, we have seen and heard scary stories of sexual and domestic abuse of deaf girls. In 2015, over 71% of girls in a deaf school in Imo State Nigeria were diagnosed with Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and over 70% were sexually abused in school and at home. Just a couple of weeks ago, an alleged scandal of sexual and cult activities was revealed in a deaf school in Abuja.
Team S-DELI trains 4 deaf girls and women who are survivors of sexual/domestic abuse from different parts of Nigeria, who in turn will train others in skill acquisitions and launch campaign against sexual and domestic abuse of Deaf girls and women for up to one year. Girls will tell their stories through our Faces of Beauty Beyond Speech program and such stories will be documented. Training will empower and improve on their self-esteem.
This project will be replicated in different parts of the country impacting thousands of more deaf girls. Current cases requiring investigation will be handed over to the appropriate authorities, while deaf girls with the best unique stories will earn education endowment funds for higher education, and their stories will be published on our website for wider readership.
