HALO Kids with Staff and Volunteers
HALO Kids with Staff and Volunteers

Spring has finally arrived, and we couldn't be more ready at the Jefferson City Girls Home. We celebrate every season and work to create memorable moments and traditions for the kids who live at HALO. We want them to see that there is beauty in change and give them a foundation of celebration to take with them after they leave the HALO Home. For us, all of that starts with togetherness.

Every evening, our HALO kids have the option to join in with an activity. The activities might be an art project, an outdoor walk, cooking a meal, or visiting a local ice cream shop. No matter what the activity, it gives us a chance to connect with our HALO kids and build the foundation of a family.

Activities at HALO tend to be a family affair. If you came to visit any given evening, you would see staff and volunteers interacting with kids, teaching young mothers how to cook a meal while being mindful of children, modeling positive care, and showing extra love.

From fairy gardens for our little ones to decorative clay bowls for our older kids, art is a big part of our everyday life at HALO. We know that people, no matter their age, can often express things through art that they can't with words. So, we give all our kids the opportunity to create.

No matter the evening, or the activity, we want to make sure that HALO truly is a home for the kids who live there. A place they can feel safe, learn and grow. Thank you for helping to make HALO special. As always, we appreciate your support.

Holiday Dinner with HALO Alumni and Staff
Holiday Dinner with HALO Alumni and Staff

One of our favorite HALO Holiday traditions in Jefferson City is our annual dinner at the Jefferson City Country Club. We love it because we get to help our current HALO kids and HALO Alumni look and feel their very best, and we get to take them somewhere they haven't been before. Generous stylists donate their time and talent to ensure our girls' hair and makeup are done professionally for our girls home. Our kids each get to choose a special outfit to wear to dinner, the first semi-formal event many of them have ever attended. We had the opportunity to discuss manners and etiquette in a real-life setting and enjoy some truly delicious food together.

Each year, HALO Founder Rebecca Welsh asks each attendee to talk about what they are thankful for and what they learned in the past year. Resoundingly, our kids stated they are grateful for HALO, the family they found there, and the people from HALO who have believed in them. What they learned always teaches us something about what is important, as they talk about seeing their potential and strength in ways they never thought possible. It is easy to see why it is our favorite night as it fills our cups and reminds us how important the work of HALO is because the kids of HALO are truly sensational human beings.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the children we serve at HALO. We couldn't do this without you.

Family Night is an important part of the HALO Jefferson City Girls Home. Family Night happens each week, on Thursday evening, for 2 hours. During that time all the residents of the HALO Home spend time together. They enjoy a warm meal donated through Meal Train by our HALO Volunteers and do an activity together as a HALO family. It isn't unusual for a past HALO resident to join in on Thursday Family Night long after leaving the program. They enjoy the distraction-free time and thoughtful activities prepared by HALO Staff.

The activities on family night vary from week to week. Often we invite a guest speaker to teach our HALO kids valuable life skills like budgeting, organization, or meal prep. If no guest speaker is scheduled, our HALO Staff teach a lesson to encourage and empower our kids. A few Thursdays ago, the HALO ladies learned about the importance of self-care and making time to help themselves feel your best. They did face masks and HALO Staff treated them to manicures.

Most Family Nights, HALO youth are encouraged to participate in an art activity. These art projects give our HALO kids an outlet for feelings they might not usually have a way to express. A HALO Staff member or volunteer leads these projects with an inspiration piece, something to encourage creativity, and then we let our kids create as they wish.

A couple of weeks ago, the HALO girls made self-control wheels to focus on the things in their control rather than the things outside of their control to avoid negative feelings and feeling powerless. Last week, they talked about doing good things for others and how kind acts have been proven scientifically to help your mental health by releasing endorphins.

No matter the activity, we are impressed and awed each week by our kids' talented people. We get to see bits of their stories, and their bravery through artistic expression and mindful thoughts. We are constantly so proud to know them and thankful to have Family Night to share with them.

Thank you for making sure HALO kids have a chance to enjoy Family Night. We appreciate your support!

Every Thursday evening is “Family Night” in the HALO Girls Home.  Staff and residents come together every Thursday, to share a home cooked meal together and to engage in an activity built around a life skill that promotes healing from the traumatic experiences they have endured, as well as building a community within HALO.

One recent Thursday, HALO staff members began to prepare the room for that evening’s Family Night, by hanging one large blank poster on the wall for each girl living at HALO. When the girls arrived, they were given a printed photo of themselves, instructed to choose a station, and to hang their picture and write their names on the respective poster board. Then, each girl grabbed a variety of markers, and went around to each station and wrote something they loved or admired about the girl whose name was written on the poster. Afterwards, the girls posed by their posters, each with beaming smiles on their faces, to read the traits that their fellow residents, and friends, noticed in them. Adjectives such as; caring, genuine, smart, funny and courageous filled the room. Staff shared that the evening was, “all about positive minds, thoughts and feelings!” After the activity, all enjoyed a dinner together, feeling appreciated and valued and among friends.  After all, the world is a complicated place, so why not build each other up every chance we get?

You are a part of building other up and appreciate your support. Thank you!

Aspen with her college acceptance letter
Aspen with her college acceptance letter

At The HALO Home, our youth have a strong focus on setting and achieving goals that support their education. HALO puts homeless youth on a path to a positive future through tutoring, scholarship opportunities and help preparing for higher education, our youth work hard to leave the "at-risk" label behind and finally be seen as just a great kid with the potential to do great things.

We are so proud to kick off the new year by celebrating HALO youth, Aspen's, graduation from the HALO Home and help move her into her college dorm room!  While in the HALO Home, Aspen worked hard on her educational goals, communicating right away her desire to further her education by going to college.  She worked hard on learning tools for coping from past traumas and her self-care to help prepare her for independent living in a college environment.

In early January, Aspen was awarded a full scholarship to a local university that provides her with three free meals a day, a dorm room with a roomate and a free bus pass to support her transportation needs to classes and work.  She quickly made plans to save money from her paycheck to apply towards campus living during the summertime, demonstrating her focus on long-term planning for her housing to ensure she breaks the cycle of homelessness for her future.

Thanks to our supporters, HALO was able to help provide Aspen with everything she needed to move into her new dorm room with confidence, just like any other student, including twin sheets, towels, a mattress pad, hangers, a trash can and a message board.

We are so proud of Aspen and wish her the best on her new journey as a college student!
