Dear friends of BCPT,

We’d like to update you on your grant support towards providing a safe and happy space for senior citizens through day care centres run by BCPT in partnership with Community Aid & Sponsorship Programme (CASP).

Your support will go towards running a day care centre for 40 senior citizens (60 – 80 years of age) in Marol, a suburb located on the northern side of Mumbai. The day care centre is located in the Dr. Lelewadi, Marol pipleline slum community wherein most of the senior citizens reside. The centre has been rendering services to the seniors for the last five years. The centre provides a safe and secure space for senior citizens to spend their time, go to for solving their issues and interact with others in similar situations. The elderly are provided with care, medical assistance, emotional support, aid & advice.

The programme and its implementation pattern is as follows:

  • day care centre for elderly runs Monday to Friday from 1.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
  • daily ongoing and other events conducted and organised by concerned teacher with the guidance and supervision  of a social worker
  • daily activities include yoga sessions, prayers, newspaper reading & story-telling, awareness generation by discussions on current topics, snacks & nutrition
  • recreation activities such as games & sports, picnics, outings, festival celebrations are conducted
  • general health check-ups are conducted twice a year
  • review meetings and follow-up of programme and services is conducted once a month

The successful highlights of the project in the last year have been:

  • improvement in overall health, reduction in stress levels
  • improved relationships with family
  • increase of awareness of existing govt. schemes, their entitlements and and their rights
  • increase interaction within themselves and project implementers has led to reduction in problems such as feeling of negligence, loneliness etc.
  • daily prayers, yoga has developed a spiritual and positive energy in elderly people
  • discussions on current affairs have made them more confident and increased communication
