Empower Hundreds of Queer Youth in California

by Bay Area Youth Summit

Bay Area Youth Summit plans to host a free conference for LGBT* youth, who are disproportionately disenfranchised in American society, featuring speakers and workshops centered around empowerment, community, and intersectional activism.

Queer and/or trans* youth, especially those of color, are disproportionately subject to harsh conditions such as homelessness, violence, and sexual abuse. In San Francisco alone, there are an estimated 200 homeless LGBT* youth. Many queer and/or trans* youth feel unsafe on a regular basis, and their voices are often suppressed by the mainstream gay rights movement. Bay Area Youth Summit seeks to amplify these important voices, by providing LGBT youth a safe space to interact and engage.

We believe in a youth led movement. Bay Area Youth Summit is the first of its kind: a queer youth non-profit with an entirely youth-led board. The summit is a unifying event-bringing together youth and allies from across the San Francisco Bay Area to collaborate, learn, and teach together. Through listening to our esteemed speakers, participating in workshops, and interacting with other youth, each attendee walks away feeling empowered and heard. The summit is our platform.

Long-Term Impact

Nearly 500 youth have been in attendance for the past summits. These youth have walked away inspired to make a difference in their communities, from standing up to bullies to carving out trans* inclusive spaces in school. The Summit 2016 will expand our growing network of queer and trans* youth in the Bay Area, sowing the seeds of grassroots youth activism.
