In Lagos slums, more children are taking to crime daily, while others are being abused through street trading and hawking. Most of these chidren cannot afford normal education due to poverty. Apart from education, an important weapon in liberating the poor from the clutches of poverty is empowerment through vocational training. ASAP Initiative seeks to empower 1000 youths between the ages of 16-25 in Lagos slums through skills acquisition.
Research has proven that eight out of ten children of the poor drop out of school before the age of 16. These children also lack vocational training that can make them self-reliant. The challenge is that these children end up becoming miscreants and instruments of chaos. Vocational training therefore serves as a means for the indigent youth to overcome the challenges of poverty and also contribute meaningfully to the society.
ASAP initiative will engage the services of experienced professionals to train 1000 indigent youths in diverse areas of vocational skills. The vocational training is targeted at disadvantaged children between the ages of 16-25 in Lagos slums. Skills acquisition will include; catering, shoe making, sowing, bead making, soap making, bag making, to mention but few. Through skill acquisition and entrepreneurial development these category of indigent citizens can become financially independent.
Vocational training for indigent youths will assist them in developing and harnessing their potentials towards the transformation of their financial capabilities as they become self-employed through the skills acquired. The above will impact positively in reducing the rate of unemployment in the country. Furthermore, this initiative will curb the rate of crime and the growth of the economy will be influenced with the snowballing effect of reducing the level of poverty in the country.
