The goal of this pilot after school project is to build resilience in youth - who have experienced trauma - through artistic self-expression, using a range of media, including text/spoken word, still images, audio, and video. By giving voice to their experiences, they build independent thinking skills, gain ownership, and learn from one another as they engage in creative challenges. This journey of self-discovery and confidence building reduces their involvement in high risk behaviors.
In Orange County, 1 in 20 youth are disconnected from the typical pathways of education, college and career. This number does not capture the number of youth at risk for disconnection: those suspended from school, involved in the juvenile justice system, or economically disadvantaged. Boomerang's programs help young people examine their actions, identify their strengths, connect decisions with consequences, learn new ways of dealing with challenges, and discover new possibilities.
This multi-disciplinary project uses spoken word, personal narratives, visual art, photography & music. Youth will create meaningful vehicles for self-expression - while gaining confidence, learning teamwork, building resilience, and nurturing their creativity - as they work on and produce a tangible product that will be showcased at the end of the year. This project will help them improve writing and presentation skills and gain asthetic appreciation, which could translate to academic success.
The project will provide a positive alternative for up to 50 students to build independent thinking skills, gain agency, and learn from one another while they are engaged in creative challenges after school, with the greater goal of reducing their high risk behaviors and staying in school.
