#ReadingHuts is our first fundraiser aimed at improving literacy in village schools in North-West Cameroon by providing books, e-readers, tutoring and literacy aids to poor children. Our current Mobile Reading and Community Book Clubs reach more than 21,000 children a month; our goal is to reach 50,000 children.
A 2016 reading assessment found less than 3% of the children reading at or above grade level standards in rural Cameroon. Learners were unable to read a single word even after four years of education. Poverty in the rural areas makes it extremely difficult for parents to afford textbooks or literacy tools for their children inside and outside of school.
This project will provide books and e-readers to thousands of children, helping them improve their literacy baselines. The project will further benefit students and families looking to sustain and improve students' literacy skills throughout the school year. Age-appropriate paper-based and digital materials for children will complement the new teaching models that Nascent is introducing and lay a foundation for a reading and intellectual culture.
In the long term we expect to improve the children's reading skills, expand the mobile reading program from 92 villages to 200 and increase the number of beneficiaries to 50,000. We will train and integrate 184 library managers to support the students. We will further institute school-based reading clubs and competitions to transform reading into a lively social event, using modern technologies to make reading fun for children and relieve their parents of the burden of buying books.
