More than half of the world's 795 million hungry live in smallholder farming communities, yet the farmers themselves often live in extreme poverty, surviving from harvest to harvest on minimal income and inadequate supplies. Opportunity International's Agriculture Finance program has a vision of empowering and realizing the full potential of smallholder farmers.
Without sufficient training or the ability to invest in quality seed and fertilizer, marginalized farmers struggle to achieve, on average, only 40% of their harvest potential, resulting in poor incomes for the farmers and food scarcity for their communities.
Opportunity International's Agriculture Finance program is investing in the untapped potential of smallholder farmers, empowering them to increase crop yields, boost incomes, gain access to profitable markets and improve food security for communities. Our innovative approach engages entire value chains to ensure farmers are empowered with loans and savings accounts, training on good agricultural practices, and access to markets so farmers can sell their crops at fair market value.
Since 2010, Opportunity has provided more than 350,000 loans to smallholder farmers and impacted 22 value chains, transforming food production in the developing world by equipping communities to feed themselves. With your support, we can reach our goal of providing 500,000 agricultural loans by 2017. By investing in Opportunity, you can help alleviate hunger for marginalized communities around the world.
