Summary

In last quarter (January-March 2017) we promoted skills to 194 youth groups (5820 youth), out of 280,000 youth who are unemployed every year in Uganda. We are aiming at promoting agricultural hands-on skills to 400 youth groups every month; in rural, semi-rural and urban areas through on-farm training and on-farm demonstrations set ups for different crops which will enrich their hands-on skills in agriculture hence improving their standards of living.

Challenge

70% of the youth in Uganda are unemployed ((UBOS-the state of Uganda's population report, 2016) and about 400,000 Youths are released annually into the job market to compete for approximately 9,000 available jobs. Only 30% of the youth who are qualified are able to find jobs, and the 70% will start taking and selling nicotine drugs, prostitution, stealing, sugar daddies and mummies where they contract the deadly HIV virus, unplanned pregnancies, early-child marriages, and even commit suicide.

Solution

We train youth groups on agronomic practices, provide planting materials, set demonstrations with them, follow up, market their produce and help them to evaluate the best enterprise. This promotes agricultural hands-on skills to the youth hence providing last-mile solutions to high rate of unemployment amongst youth in Uganda.

Long-Term Impact

Youth development initiative staffs will always provide technical assistance to 400 unemployed youth groups (12,000 youth), mentor them, follow their enterprises, source for startups for fulfilling their dreams, and link/provide market for their agricultural produce/products . We believe; upbringing youth groups with appropriate agricultural hands-on skills within their on-farm demonstrations will alleviate the vicious cycle of unemployment amongst youth in Uganda.
