Summary

As part of its new African Healthcare Hubs of Excellence endeavor, the AU ADHI, with the support of the AU's US Mission, is creating 100 medical grants for promising doctors of the diaspora to work in Africa leading up to the launch of the first African Healthcare Hub of Excellence in Zimbabwe. These diaspora grants are offered competitively with carefully selected partners already working on the continent. The AU Mission is seeking to crowdfund these grants from the diaspora and supporters.

Challenge

Africa has not Healthcare Hubs of Excellence where tailored care is provided. Where cutting edge research is conducted and where the medical staff is primarily members of the diaspora keen to bring back their knowledge and expertise for the advancement of medical care on the continent. This is why the AU Mission in the US has launched the African Diaspora Healthcare Initiative (ADHI). ADHI has launched the diaspora medical grant program for which the Mission seeks global diaspora support.

Solution

The diaspora medical grant program seeks to support the return of diaspora medical doctors, researchers and practitioners to work in the field with partner institutions for a period of between 6 mos - 2 years. Following this training, they will join Zimbabwe's Healthcare Hub of Excellence (currently at the planning stage) where they will work as medical staff on care, cutting edge research, and health administration.

Long-Term Impact

By funding diaspora medical grants, you are facilitating the closing of an important gap in the development of Africa - Healthcare. The diaspora has long wanted to return to Africa. But the lack of infrastructure, medical platforms, and programs meant to facilitate their return and the provision of their expertise in the advancement of care on the continent has hampered progress. This program mobilizes the diaspora medical community around Hubs of Excellence that will spur economic development.
