AYPAD created the Hockey Project with a mission to expose the sport to thousands of young people while promoting peace through sport. Hockey is a relatively a new sport in Africa and with many young people living through hardship and deplorable conditions, the need to introduce the sport was timely as it engages young people to reduce the traumatic effects of War, Violence, Abuse and embrace peace while developing their unique hockey talents that can contribute meaningfully to societal growth.
Despite significant natural wealth, Africa is among the poorest continents in the world. Sport plays a vital role in life expectancy and there are many more benefits, such as a healthier society. However, in the sports field, there is a lack of structural platform. With the protection and empowerment of unprivileged children as a top-priority, the aim of this project is to provide a safe, competitive team sports environment where students can enjoy all benefits.
Goals of this project are to provide the structure that will make it possible to build, sustain, and promote the sport while providing a safe environment for youth to not only learn about hockey but enjoy the physical and mental benefits of participation in competitive sports. In tandem, the youth will be exposed to important social development programs like in crime prevention, while learning valuable life skills for their long-term personal, academic, and professional development.
This project will benefit communities. It envisages the development within community, which its inhabitants had been dreaming of since the time of their settlement there. The project has the capacity to turn the non- productive youth of the community into the responsible citizens who will work toward the holistic development of our society. As the project is highly beneficial for the society, its day-to-day needs will be taken care of by the community members and other stakeholders.
