Challenge

Approximately two-thirds of individuals residing on St. John do not have comprehensive health insurance; including over one-third having no health insurance at all. This is significantly above the U.S. average and is the highest rate out of all the U.S. Virgin Islands. Given the high cost of medical services, under or uninsured individuals often forgo routine and preventive healthcare, self-diagnose or put off seeking medical attention until the problem becomes emergent. This approach to heal

Solution

The Island Health & Wellness Center will provide primary care that is accessible and affordable to all individuals regardless of their financial or health insurance status. Every person has the right to quality, affordable and accessible health care. Patients will be treated compassionately and on a personal and individualized level.

Long-Term Impact

The benefits of this concept will include longer visits with healthcare providers, variable available hours for appointments, and access to educational and supportive medical resources. This will lead to trusting relationships between patients and providers, patient advocacy and involvement regarding decisions in their care, less patient confusion, higher medical adherence rates, more confidence in the medical care practiced and a healthier community.
