Adopt-A-Student, Change a Life in Kenya.

by Progressive Volunteers
Adopt-A-Student, Change a Life in Kenya.

Summary

PV-Kenya has been working with a team of dedicated volunteers to improve the quality of education, promote access to reading materials and help students gain essential life skills. We are building on the successes of the project to roll out a new 'Adopt-A-Student' programme in 2019, targeting 40 students. This entails connecting a student with a benefactor to pay tuition fee and help supply educational materials, and engaging local volunteers in the mentorship programme.

Challenge

In Kenya, there are mandatory tuition fees and learning materials required in order to attend secondary schools and colleges. Throughout the mentorship program, we have encountered cases of students dropping out of school and college due to the inability to afford tuition and other learning/education materials, particularly in informal settlements and rural areas. Without education, these young people struggle to find stable employment, with many unfortunately turning to crime to earn a living.

Solution

Through the mentorship programme, we have identified 40 academically gifted students who need financial assistance to continue their education in 2019. Funds accrued through this project will allow PV-Kenya to pay for their tuition fees and buy the required learning materials needed. The organization through a team of dedicated volunteers, will continue to provide free teaching assistance and support the most underprivileged students through mentorship, and organising extra-curricular activities

Long-Term Impact

If the project is successful, more students will complete schooling with a high level of literacy and core skills, enabling them to succeed in life. There is potential for more than 40 students benefiting from the programme each year. We will use school performance in national exams to track the impact of our work and longitudinally monitor the progress of the individual students we provide intensive support to. Our volunteers will also gain skills and experience in community empowerment. .
