This project will build capacity of faith leaders to develop an understanding of human sexuality as a starting point for creating an enabling environment for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender People in Malawi. This will in turn reduce violence against LGBT persons.
There is growing evidence that the LGBT community continues to grow in the world and Malawi has not been an exception either. The LGBT community is increasingly becoming visible in Malawi. However, in Malawi LGBT persons have been labeled as "madness", "moral decadence" leading to increased cases of violence against them fueled by faith and community leaders . Both the society and the government have continued to deny the existence of LGBT and have also continued to stigmatize the LGBT persons
This project will solve the problem by identifying faith leaders and traditional leaders who will be trained as change agents. There will be dialogue meetings between LGBT and change agents in order for them to understand issues affecting the LGBT community. The Change agents will also be given a task to reach out to fellow leaders with messages of tolerance, love and inclusiveness of LGBT in society. the change agents will also reach out to their subjects through awareness campaigns
At the end of the project we anticipate that there will be an Increased awareness and improved knowledge on LGBTI issues, sexuality, sexual orientation, Human Rights among Religious Leaders, traditional leaders and the whole community at large. There will also be reduction of homophobia and human rights violations towards LGBTI among faith communities in Malawi. Through the implementation MANERELA+ hopes violence, stigma and discrimination among Religious Leaders towards LGBTI will reduce.
