In thousands of cases marrow transplantation from an unrelated donor is the only way to save lives of patients, in particular, kids and teenagers, who suffer from leukemia and other deadly blood diseases. The main goal of the Karelian Registry is to dramatically increase the number of bone marrow donors in Russia. Funds raised through this project will allow us to add 2500 more donors in the Registry. Our mission is to give hope!
Unfortunately, the database of Russian bone morrow donors is still very small. Only about 200 transplantations are performed yearly in Russia, while more than 4,000 people need it. In 95% cases a foreign donor is used. Donors from abroad are genetically different from Russian people, therefore, most of the patients who urge bone marrow transplantation in Russia cannot be matched and die.
The Karelian Registry finds compatible donors for the patients who urgently need bone marrow transplantation. The more people we list as marrow donors, the more chances we give to thousands yet incurable patients, whom we are able to help. The donors listed at the Karelian Registry are available for patients worldwide via the international BMDW search system. So, anyone who has Russian roots and needs a marrow donor from Russia can use our database.
Growing the donor database, we give hope to the growing number of patients, who suffer from leukemia and other blood disorders, and whose only chance is bone marrow transplantation. The donors are listed in the database for decades, until they are above 60, so the growing marrow donor database is the long-term project, which will make it possible to cure patients in the future, once they appear compatible with some of the listed donors.
