Constructing a fruit pulp unit process

By Daniele Cesano | PhD, Technical Coordinator of Adapta Sertao

In the small towns of the semi arid region of Brazil, like Pintadas where Adapta Sertao is working, every family farmer has a small piece of land where  there is always a fruit tree like  umbu, hog plum, passion fruit or caja. Most of these fruit trees eventually rot for lack of means to process them because the harvesting period is limited to just a few days per year. This happens especially fruit trees such as the seasonal umbu that can produce over 250 pounds of fruit per tree in a very limited period of time.
Adapta Sertao is helping the local farmers' cooperative to create a supply chain that can take advantage of the surpluses of native fruit, adding value through processing industry to produce pulps, and identifying new markets for absorption of industrial products through a job that is culturally associated to the woman. In the next reports, as the project goes on, we will put pictures and give you details of how we are constructing this unit.
