Freedom to Read, Inc. brings the magic of books to deserving children on Eleuthera Island in The Bahamas. We are operating and maintaining 12 library sites on Eleuthera. Many people here have little opportunity to travel from one settlement to the next therefore it's important to provide free access to literacy, right where it is needed. Our goal for 2021 includes opening 2 new library sites in South Eleuthera where poverty is rampant. We can change lives through free access to literacy.
Providing a public education in the Family Islands of The Bahamas is very challenging. This archipelago of more than 700 islands and cays is unique. The Ministry of Education must provide infrastructure, materials, people and services on several islands. Their budgets are stretched far too thin! Freedom to Read, Inc. partners with local stakeholders and strategic partners in the region to design, construct, train and maintain public libraries on Eleuthera to fill in this educational gap.
Freedom to Read, Inc. provides free access to literacy on Eleuthera Island. Creating two new libraries in South Eleuthera will serve the needs of a population in poverty. There are currently no libraries or places for exploring intellectual curiosity in this region.
This project will provide free access to information in 2 South Eleuthera communities. Children, students and the general public will now be able to use the internet for job searches, passport applications, school projects and just plain reading for enjoyment!
