Summary

An estimated 106 million children - 6% of the world's young people - suffer from a moderate to severe disability. Our project will provide free corrective surgery, prosthetic limbs and physical therapy to children with limb disabilities in developing countries in Centra Asia. Children are referred to our programs by local doctors, educators, community leaders, family and friends. Their condition is evaluated and appropriate treatment is delivered. Treatment costs are fully covered by ALTSO.

Challenge

Without proper treatment, these children face a lifetime of discrimination and abandonment. Their inability to walk also prevents them from accessing education or employment outside of street begging. A Leg To Stand On has identified 40 children in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who have lost limbs in traumatic accidents or were born with limb disabilities and cannot afford treatment.

Solution

A Leg To Stand On (ALTSO) will provide 40 children suffering from limb disabilities with free prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, corrective surgeries, and rehabilitation. In collaboration with local hospitals and clinics, ALTSO's programs provide free orthopedic care to disabled children (age 0-18) who would otherwise go untreated due to lack of economic resources, allowing them the physical capabilities needed to access opportunity and self-esteem.

Long-Term Impact

Such treatment will give the children the physical capabilities and self-esteem needed to access school in areas where transportation is not available, and subsequently seek employment opportunities outside of dangerous and low-paying work such as street begging. Mobility brings the opportunities needed to achieve a self-sufficient and sustainable life.
