This project will improve the facilities and therefore the operational efficiency of the Nuestra Senora del Carmen Elderly Home in Higuey, a city located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic, through the construction and the equipping of a new pavilion, so that it can worthily accommodate 16 new residents that have no where to live and someone who cares for them. 60 male and female elderly people and 15 staff personnel will be benefited
The elderly home is administered by a catholic sisterhood with very limited economic resources, the home is the only one in Higuey city (Dominican Republic), whose population exceeds 250 thousand inhabitants. Currently 58 people live in it (15 staff personnel / 43 elderly people). There is a growing demand for accommodation for homeless elderly people, who lives in conditions of poverty. Currently, the home lacks sufficient space to accomodate and take care of them properly
This project will build a new pavilion in the elderly home to accommodate 16 elders plus, which will consist of 3 large bedrooms, 3 large bathrooms, 2 TV rooms, 2 dining rooms and an open terrace. Each of these areas will be equipped and furnished in order to get comfortable spaces that ensure the well-being of the residents. The bedrooms and the bathrooms will be spacious to facilitate the mobility and the safety of the residents, as many of them use wheelchairs and walking assistant devices
The project will meet a great need of the community, by offering a dignified life to the elderly people in the home. Also it will improve the guarantee of the rights to this vulnerable segment of the population, since their basic needs will be covered (housing, food, clothing, medicines etc.) and they will receive a friendly and respectful treatment. It will benefit the 75 people who will live and work in the home and will likewise positively impact all of the inhabitants of Higuey city
