We are pleased to report that thanks to a grant from a charitable trust, Pizz school and support centre in Zambia were able to purchase an egg incubator with a capacity of 1000 eggs.
The plan was to purchase a generator as well to manage power cuts, but on advice they purchased a battery and inverter instead. We are really excited to be able to support Pizz in this endeavour. Amongst the team heading out to Pizz in August to help with the holiday club is a volunteer with agricultural knowledge, who will be able to help get the incubator up and running.
Many of the children who attend Pizz come to school hungry and the school lunch provided is often the only meal they get in a day. Levels of malnutrition in Zambia are amongst the highest in the world (UNICEF) and lack of dietary diversification has been identified as one of the main causes of malnutrition. The incubator has great potential for increasing the nutritional value of the school lunches already provided.
It has the added benefit of providing a source of income for the project through the sale of eggs and chickens as well as the loan of the incubator itself to the local community. This project represents a small step on a long path to self-sustainability. We will keep you updated with progress!
