This project will allow us to start a trial mushroom farming program in rural Cambodia for our community, addressing malnutrition and stunting rates, and helping these families break the cycle of poverty.
32% of Cambodian children experience stunting (UNICEF 2017). Of the 35% of Cambodia's population who live in multi-dimensional poverty, 40% live in rural poverty. Due to a lack of knowledge and techniques and the cost involved in setting up a profitable mushroom farm, most of our villagers are unable to establish mushroom farms by themselves. They require proper training and support in order to do this, which our project will allow them to.
The project will be enabled our villagers to establish mushroom farms by themselves, through attending our training about the theoretical and practical knowledge on mushroom farming and nutrition at our organization. This will provide nutrition, a better income for the families, and reduce a stunting rate for the children. Because not many people do it, hence there more chance to have a good customer-base and high profits.
This project will allow the families to generate an extra income of USD$2,400 per year in addition to their other jobs by growing and selling their mushrooms, which will move them out of poverty, improving the families' health, and well-being.
